It’s a scene many parents know well: your teen grabs their backpack, heads out the door with keys in hand, and you’re left hoping their drive to school is a safe one. For Tim Forman, owner of Adams Automotive and father of a now-grown student driver, it’s more than a memory; it’s a mission.

Back-to-school season is about fresh starts, but before your student driver heads back to class, their car needs a safety check just as much as their schedule needs organizing. At Adams Automotive, we believe safety starts with education, prevention, and preparation.

Why Car Safety for Teen Drivers Matters

Driving is one of the most dangerous daily activities we do, especially for teenagers. Inexperience, distractions, and unpredictable traffic patterns all play a role. But one thing parents can control is the condition of the vehicle.

This time of year, we see a spike in preventable issues—flat tires, worn brakes, battery failures that could have been addressed with a simple check-up. That’s why we created this back-to-school safety guide, built on decades of professional experience and personal parenting.

 1. Brake Safety: Stop Worry in Its Tracks

Brakes are your teen’s first line of defense. In Colorado, where stop-and-go school traffic and sudden weather changes are common, dependable braking isn’t just convenient—it’s critical.

Signs Your Teen’s Vehicle Needs a Brake Inspection:

  • A grinding, squealing, or screeching sound when braking
  • Vibration or pulling when applying the brakes
  • Brake pedal feels soft, low, or unresponsive
  • Warning lights on the dashboard
  • Increased stopping distance

Our ASE-certified technicians perform thorough inspections and replace brake pads, rotors, and fluid as needed. At Adams Automotive, we focus on education and trust, so you and your teen always understand what’s being serviced and why.

2. Tire Tread & Pressure: Staying Grounded on the Road

Your teen might not notice worn tread or low pressure, but we do. Tire safety can mean the difference between maintaining control and hydroplaning in a rainstorm.

What We Check in Every Tire Safety Inspection:

  • Tread Depth: We recommend a minimum tread depth of 4/32” for safe driving, especially on wet roads.
  • Tire Pressure: We’ll ensure all four tires (plus the spare!) are properly inflated to the manufacturer’s specs.
  • Uneven Wear: This could indicate suspension or alignment issues, which we can correct to extend tire life.
  • Age of Tires: Even if the tread looks fine, rubber breaks down over time. If your teen’s tires are over 6 years old, it’s time to replace them.

A quick tire check before school starts can prevent costly blowouts, poor handling, and skidding on wet pavement. We also offer affordable tire rotations and alignments right here at our Castle Rock location.

3. Emergency Preparedness: Expect the Unexpected

Even if your student’s vehicle is in great shape, emergencies happen. Having an emergency kit on hand can be the difference between a quick fix and a stressful situation.

We Recommend Packing These Essentials:

  • Jumper cables or a portable jump starter
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First-aid kit
  • Reflective warning triangle
  • Basic toolkit
  • A tire pressure gauge and a portable air pump
  • Non-perishable snacks and bottled water
  • Blanket or jacket (for winter months)
  • Phone charger and backup battery
  • List of emergency contacts and insurance info

We’re happy to build a custom kit with you—just swing by, and we’ll help make sure your student is equipped for the road ahead.

4. Preventive Maintenance: A+ Performance Year-Round

Beyond brakes and tires, now is the perfect time to catch up on general preventive maintenance. For student drivers who may not know how to spot early warning signs, staying ahead of the curve is vital.

Let us check:

  • Oil level and condition
  • Coolant and other fluid levels
  • Battery life
  • Belts and hoses
  • Wiper blades and windshield washer fluid
  • Lights and signals

We use a Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) system to clearly show you the condition of your vehicle, with pictures, notes, and honest recommendations.
