December 1, 2025

The holiday season brings joy, warmth, and memories that last a lifetime—but let’s be honest, it also brings traffic, unpredictable weather, and long hours on the road. If you’re planning to travel this December—whether it’s to see family in another state, make a weekend run to the mountains, or simply head north to Denver or south to Colorado Springs—your vehicle needs to be up to the task.

At Adams Automotive in Castle Rock, we believe peace of mind starts with preparation. The best gift you can give yourself (and your loved ones) this year is a safe, reliable vehicle for the journey ahead. That’s why we’ve created this essential pre-travel vehicle inspection checklist to keep you safe and rolling into the New Year with confidence.

1. Brakes: Your First Line of Defense on Slick Roads

Your brake system is the most critical safety component in your vehicle, especially in December when snow, sleet, and icy conditions are common along I-25 and surrounding mountain passes.

Before you travel, check:

  •   Brake pads for wear if they’re less than ¼ inch thick, it is time to replace.
  • Brake rotors for grooves or warping that may affect stopping distance.
  •   Brake fluid level and condition dirty or low fluid can compromise performance.

If you’re hearing squeaks, grinding, or your brake pedal feels soft or spongy, those are red flags. We offer full brake system inspections to ensure your vehicle stops smoothly and safely even on icy Castle Rock roads.

2. Tires: Your Grip on Safety

Whether you’re facing black ice, deep snow, or wet pavement, your tires are your only contact with the road. Worn or underinflated tires drastically reduce traction, steering response, and braking performance.

Make sure to:

  •  Check tread depth use the penny test or ask us to measure it.
  •  Inspect for uneven wear, which may indicate alignment or suspension issues.
  •    Inflate tires to the manufacturer-recommended PSI, which can vary with temperature.

Thinking about switching to winter tires? It’s a smart move for Colorado. We’ll walk you through your options and install what fits your driving habits best.

3. Lights: Visibility is everything

You need to see clearly and be seen clearly on every mile of your trip. With shorter days and longer nights, lights play a bigger role than ever.

Test:

  •   Headlights and high beams for brightness and alignment.
  •  Brake lights and turn signals grab a friend or family member to help verify they’re working.
  • Hazard lights, which are crucial if you’re pulled over or stuck.

Dim or burnt-out bulbs are easy fixes. Don’t wait until you’re halfway through the canyon to find out something’s not working.

4. Windshield Wipers and Washer Fluid: Don’t Let Visibility Slide

We’ve all had that “oh no” moment when the windshield gets covered in road grime or salt spray and the wipers just smear it worse. Avoid that stress with this quick check:

  • Replace wiper blades if they’re cracked, noisy, or leave streaks.
  • Use winter-formulated washer fluid that won’t freeze on the glass.
  • Make sure nozzles spray evenly and adjust if needed.

Remember, if you can’t see, you can’t drive safely. Visibility is safety.

5. Battery Health: Don’t Get Left in the Cold

Cold weather weakens car batteries and unfortunately, that’s when most battery failures happen. If your battery is over three years old, have it tested before hitting the road.

We’ll:

  •  Check the charge level and voltage
  • Clean any corrosion on terminals
  • Inspect for loose connections or swelling

The last thing you want is to be stranded in Monument with a dead battery on Christmas Eve.

6. Fluid Check: Keeping Your Engine Happy

Just like we need water and fuel, your vehicle needs clean, full fluids to run smoothly. Cold weather affects how fluids flow and protect your engine.

Check:

  • Engine oil for cleanliness and the proper level.
  • Transmission fluid is often overlooked but vital for smooth shifting.
  • Coolant (antifreeze) to ensure your engine doesn’t freeze or overheat.
  • Brake and power steering fluids for color and contamination.

We can check and top off all fluids or do full fluid exchanges if needed.

7. Heating, Defrost, and Cabin Comfort Systems

There’s nothing worse than a cold cabin or a windshield that won’t clear. Before you head out, test:

  • Cabin heating performance: warm air should start flowing in minutes.
  • Defrost functions for both front and rear windows.
  • Heated seats or steering wheels, if your vehicle has them, comfort matters on long drives!

8. Emergency Kit: Just in Case

It’s Colorado we hope for smooth travels, but we prepare for delays and detours. Make sure your car is stocked with:

  • A flashlight and extra batteries
  • Blankets, gloves, and hats
  • Jumper cables or a portable jump starter (preferred)
  •  An ice scraper and snow brush
  • A first aid kit
  •  Non-perishable snacks and water
  • A phone charger and an emergency contact list

At Adams Automotive, we always say. Better to have it and not need it than the other way around.
